The disinfection of water using ozone has many advantages over other types of disinfection such as chlorine, sodium hypochlorite, and bromine. One significant advantage is that ozone is manufactured on site without chemicals. A simple chamber holds a pair of electrodes separated by an air gap. The production of ozone occurs as air passes between the pair of electrodes and high voltage is induced across the gap of the chamber. Portions of the oxygen molecules are ionized and becomes attached to the non-ionized oxygen molecule ( O2 plus O becomes O3 ).
Ozone is 50% stronger and reacts 3000 times faster than chlorine, however, its retention time before dissipating is much shorter than chlorine. Because ozone dissipates quickly, it is common to use ozone with other disinfectants such as chlorine in distribution systems. This allows smaller amounts of chemicals such as chlorine to be used to ensure that the water retains disinfecting capabilities throughout the distribution network.
The final stage of the ozone process is post-filtration. Post-filtration will remove any dead microbes from the process water.
An ORP sensor can be used to indicate ozone levels in water. The ORP sensor does not measure ozone specifically, only the oxidation activity in the water. The use of an ORP sensor is an economical and accurate alternative to using an ozone sensor.
Measurements in Ozone:
Flow: Monitor the amount of water processed through the ozone chamber
ORP : Monitor the millivolt (mV) value which indicates the amount of ozone in the water
