Aquarium schematic

Process Description

Aquariums recycle the tank water and only occasionally add new water to the system. The recycled water is typically ozonated to clean out bacterial waste and sent through a sand filter to remove other wastes in the water. ORP is usually used to measure ozone levels in the water. The flow in the system is measured at various points in the loop. A paddlewheel may function properly in this type of application. However, bacterial growth may build up on the rotor and frequent cleaning may be required. Also, some solids may flow pass the sensor and clog the rotor. A magmeter flow sensor is a good alternative that requires less cleaning and maintenance. The temperature of most aquariums is monitored to insure the water environment is tolerable to the species in the tank. Other measurements such as pressure and level may also be monitored.

Measurements in closed system aquariums:

Flow:

  1. Monitor water turn-over through the filter system

  2. Monitor the amount of discharge water

ORP: Monitor disinfectant levels in the recycled water

Pressure: Monitor the media filter tank pressure which is a good indicator of when a back-wash procedure should be performed

Temperature: Monitor and maintain proper temperature, critical to many species of sea life

Level using a pressure sensor : Monitor hydrostatic level as an accurate alternative to mechanical level switches.
